Ireland – the Emerald Isle – is known for its wild, rugged landscapes and its lively, warm-hearted and hospitable people. Passionate adventurer and photographer Robert Neu sets out to find out whether this popular cliché really holds true. So he embarks on a journey to cycle all the way around Ireland. His travel rules are simple: camp six out of every seven days and photograph a local person every day. Along the way, he braves rain, bad luck and breakdowns, struggles with the endless hills and learns to take everything with a good dose of Irish humour. As a reward for the challenges of his more than 5,000-kilometre cycling adventure, he returns with breathtaking images of Ireland’s landscapes and fascinating insights into the country’s culture.
The Wild Atlantic Way, the famous coastal route along the Atlantic, takes him past the stunning peninsulas of Dingle and Beara as well as the legendary Ring of Kerry. On Skellig Michael, he encounters landscapes straight out of Star Wars and adorable puffins. The Aran Islands are shaped by a harsh climate and prehistoric monuments. Robert Neu climbs the mountains of Connemara, joins pilgrims on St Patrick’s Day and experiences authentic evenings filled with music, laughter and conviviality in the country’s traditional pubs. His journey takes him all the way around the island, from the milder south to the remote north, where time seems to have stood still.
