Special Exhibiton "Perlen der Gotik"
On the occasion of the 290th commemorative year of the Salzburg emigration in 1732, the Leogang Mining and Gothic Museum presents the special show "Salzburg History Screwed into Silver". The focus is on so-called "screw medals", curious fabrications of baroque arts and crafts, which deal with a dramatic chapter in Salzburg's history: the emigration of Salzburg's Protestants from 1731 to 1733. The exhibition shows the most beautiful examples from the collection of Bankhaus Spängler.
Images of flight and migration have shaped the past years. 290 years ago, a stream of refugees from Salzburg stirred the emotions. More than 20,000 Protestants - about one sixth of Salzburg's population at the time - had to leave the country because of their faith and move in groups of many hundreds across Germany to an uncertain future. Most ended up in East Prussia, where their descendants were again forced to flee at the end of the Second World War. In addition to graphic art and letterpress printing, it is above all medal art that commemorates the fate of the Salzburg religious refugees.
