"Water is not a common commodity, but an inherited good that must be protected, defended and treated accordingly..." (Excerpt from the preface to the European Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC-WFD).
Water plays a central role in our lives. Not only that the human body consists of more than 60% water, we need water every day for cooking, washing up, laundry, personal hygiene, watering our gardens and fields and watering our animals, and production in many companies would not be feasible without water. With water we can protect ourselves from fire and in religion it is said to have a cleansing and blessing role. This incomplete list shows how important water is for us humans, and therefore it is not surprising that people have built their settlements along rivers and on the shores of lakes. However, the proximity to the watercourses also means that the rivers repeatedly burst their banks, destroying people's livelihoods.
